Step-by-Step Testing Procedure

Follow these steps in order every month to ensure your entire security system is functioning correctly and ready for any emergency.

1

Put Your System in Test Mode

Before testing any component, you must place your system in test mode. This tells the monitoring center to expect alarm signals and prevents emergency dispatch to your home during testing.

How to Enter Test Mode

  • Call your monitoring center and request a test window (typically 30-60 minutes)
  • Some panels allow you to enter test mode directly from the keypad
  • The Alarm.com app may also offer a “Test Mode” option under system settings
  • Provide your account number and verbal password for verification

Critical: Never skip this step. Triggering alarm signals without test mode active can result in police or fire dispatch, false alarm fines from your municipality, and unnecessary stress for your monitoring operators. SECUTER customers can call 1-855-SECUTER to request test mode at any time.

2

Test Each Door and Window Sensor

Contact sensors are the most common component in any alarm system, and they are also the most likely to develop issues over time due to battery drain, misalignment, or adhesive failure.

Testing Procedure

  • Arm your system in Away mode
  • Open each door with a sensor one at a time
  • Verify the panel displays the correct zone name (e.g., “Front Door Open”)
  • Close the door and verify the zone returns to “Ready” status
  • Repeat for every window sensor, opening and closing each one
  • Check that the sensor and magnet are still aligned within 1/2 inch when closed

If a sensor does not trigger when opened, check the battery first. Most wireless sensors use CR123A or AA batteries that last 3-5 years. Also check that the sensor has not shifted or that the adhesive has not loosened. Reposition and retest any failing sensors.

3

Test Motion Sensors

Motion sensors can lose sensitivity over time due to lens contamination, battery degradation, or environmental changes. Monthly testing ensures they still detect movement reliably.

Testing Procedure

  • With the system armed in Away mode, walk into each room with a motion sensor
  • Walk across the sensor field at varying distances (near wall, center of room, far side)
  • Verify the panel displays the correct zone name when motion is detected
  • If you have pets, verify pet immunity is still working (let your pet move freely in the room)
  • Check the lens for dust, cobwebs, or obstructions and clean with a soft cloth

PIR motion sensors detect movement across their field of view, not directly toward them. Walk perpendicular to the sensor (across its view) rather than straight at it for the most effective test. If a sensor is not triggering, try cleaning the lens before assuming a hardware fault.

4

Test the Siren

Your siren is the audible deterrent that alerts you and your neighbors to an intrusion. A siren that fails during an actual emergency defeats the purpose of your entire alarm system.

Testing Procedure

  • Warn family members and neighbors that you are testing your alarm siren
  • Trigger a test alarm through your panel’s test function
  • Listen for the siren at full volume (it should be loud and clear)
  • If you have separate indoor and outdoor sirens, verify both sound
  • Disarm immediately after confirming the siren works

A weak or silent siren may indicate a wiring issue, dead backup battery in the siren unit, or a blown speaker. If the siren sounds weak or distorted, it needs replacement. An external siren should be audible from at least 100 feet away.

5

Test Cellular Backup

Cellular backup is your system’s failover communication path. If an intruder cuts your internet cable or your power goes out, the cellular module keeps your system connected to the monitoring center.

Testing Procedure

  • Disconnect your router or unplug the Ethernet cable from your panel
  • Wait 2-3 minutes for the panel to detect the lost broadband connection
  • Check the panel status screen for “Cellular” or “Cell Active” indicator
  • Trigger a sensor to verify the signal reaches the monitoring center via cellular
  • Reconnect your internet and verify the panel switches back to broadband

If the cellular backup does not activate, the cellular communicator module may need replacement or reactivation. The SIM card may also need to be updated. Contact SECUTER for remote diagnostics if the cellular path is not functioning.

6

Test App Notifications

Your phone app is how you stay informed about your system’s activity in real time. If notifications are not working, you could miss critical alerts about alarms, sensor faults, or system errors.

Testing Procedure

  • Open a door or trigger a motion sensor while watching your phone
  • Verify a push notification appears within 10 seconds
  • Check that the notification displays the correct sensor name and event type
  • Test on all family member phones to ensure everyone receives alerts
  • Check the app activity log to confirm events are being recorded
  • Test camera motion alerts if you have video monitoring enabled

If notifications are delayed or missing, check your phone’s notification settings for the Alarm.com app. Ensure the app is not being restricted by battery optimization settings. On Android, add the app to your battery optimization whitelist. On iPhone, verify notifications are allowed in Settings.

7

Exit Test Mode and Document Results

Once you have completed all tests, it is essential to exit test mode so your system returns to active monitoring. Forgetting this step leaves your home unprotected.

Wrap-Up Procedure

  • Call your monitoring center to take the system out of test mode
  • Confirm with the operator that all test signals were received
  • Verify the panel shows “Ready to Arm” status with all zones clear
  • Write down any issues found: which sensors failed, battery warnings, weak siren
  • Schedule repairs or replacements for any failing components
  • Set a calendar reminder for your next monthly test

Keep a simple testing log (paper or digital) with the date, what you tested, and any issues found. Over time, this log helps identify patterns such as sensors that need frequent battery replacement or zones that develop recurring faults.

When to Call for Professional Service

Some issues require professional attention. Contact SECUTER support if you encounter any of these problems during testing.

Panel Shows Communication Failure

If your panel cannot reach the monitoring center through either broadband or cellular after troubleshooting, a professional needs to check the communicator module and antenna connections.

Multiple Sensors Not Responding

If two or more sensors fail to communicate with the panel simultaneously, there may be a panel receiver issue, wireless interference, or a panel firmware problem that requires professional diagnosis.

Siren Completely Silent

A completely silent siren (not just weak) may indicate wiring damage, a blown speaker, or a failed siren module. This is a critical safety component that needs immediate repair.

Panel Backup Battery Not Charging

If the panel reports a low backup battery that does not charge after being plugged in for 24 hours, the battery may need replacement. A dead backup battery means your system will shut down during a power outage.

Persistent False Alarms

If a sensor triggers repeatedly without cause, it may have a hardware fault, environmental interference, or incorrect programming. Professional recalibration or replacement is recommended.

Panel Displays Error Codes

Unfamiliar error codes or persistent trouble indicators on your panel display may indicate firmware issues, zone programming errors, or internal component failures that need professional troubleshooting.

Testing Tips from Security Professionals

Make your monthly testing routine more effective and efficient with these expert recommendations.

Pick the Same Day Each Month

Choose a consistent day each month for testing, such as the first Saturday. Setting a recurring calendar reminder ensures you never forget. Consistency builds the habit that keeps your system reliable.

Replace Batteries Proactively

Do not wait for low-battery alerts. Replace all sensor batteries on a fixed schedule (every 3-5 years depending on the sensor model). Batch-replacing prevents the cycle of chasing one dead battery after another.

Test After Severe Weather

Heavy storms, extreme temperatures, and power outages can affect sensor alignment, battery performance, and communication modules. Run an extra test after any significant weather event or extended power outage.

Involve Your Family

Use monthly testing as an opportunity to teach family members how the system works. Everyone should know how to arm, disarm, recognize alarm sounds, and call the monitoring center if needed.

Clean Camera Lenses

While testing cameras, wipe each lens with a soft, dry cloth. Outdoor cameras accumulate dust, pollen, and water spots that degrade image quality over time. Clear lenses mean clearer evidence.

Check Your Emergency Contact List

Review your emergency contact list during each monthly test. Phone numbers change, people move, and contact priorities shift. An outdated contact list delays emergency response when seconds matter.
